FA issues warning to former Scunthorpe owner David Hilton following investigation

The FA has issued a warning to David Hilton following an investigation into the former Scunthorpe United owner.

The Athletic reported in September 2023 that Hilton had been sentenced to two years in prison in 2015 for 15 counts of fraud when known as David Anderson, one of the four names he is known to have used.

That led to Scunthorpe confirming that Hilton was “under investigation” by the FA in October. A Scunthorpe statement at the time outlined Hilton’s intention to withdraw all funding, having bought the club for £3 in January 2023.

“The FA has issued this individual with a formal warning as to his conduct following a thorough investigation,” the FA confirmed last week when asked about Hilton.

Investigation: The football club owner with four names believed to have been convicted of fraud

Scunthorpe have been relegated three times in the last six seasons and now play in the National League North. They were in the Championship as recently as 2010.

Local businesswoman Michelle Harness bought the club from Hilton last October. When completing the takeover, Harness said Hilton had received no fee “and wiped all monies that he personally invested to enable this deal to happen”.

Scunthorpe are top of the National League North after two wins from two games to begin this campaign having finished second last year and lost to Boston United in the play-offs.
