Hunter Dickinson, No. 1 Kansas hold off Michigan State in Champions Classic rock fight

The No. 1 team in men’s college basketball is still undefeated, but it wasn’t always pretty. Kansas overcame a sloppy first half and pulled away from Michigan State for a 77-69 win in the Champions Classic, fueled by 28 points and 12 rebounds from center Hunter Dickinson.

Kansas’ 92-89 win over North Carolina in Lawrence on Friday helped strengthen the Jayhawks’ grip on No. 1 in the first in-season AP poll of the year, but they came out flat in Atlanta. Dickinson scored his team’s only eight points of the first nine minutes of game action, but Kansas was ice-cold from the field for much of the night.

Bill Self’s Jayhawks have won five consecutive games at the Champions Classic, an annual early-season showcase featuring a doubleheader of rotating matchups between Kansas, Michigan State, Duke and Kentucky. The win also pushed Self past legendary coach Phog Allen for the most wins by any coach in KU history (591).
