The Real-Life Diet of Cody Ko, Whose Favorite Meal Is Chicken and Waffles


Damn, I don’t. I’m usually just working during lunch. Or I’ll do the New York Times crossword or something like that.

You said you try to not eat fast food that often, but when you do, what’s your favorite place?

Oh man, that’s a great question. I want to say probably Raising Cane’s. It’s kind of a rarity. There are not a ton in LA proper, but there are a lot of them outside. So when I’m on a road trip, that’s when I hit Raising Cane’s, and it’s such a treat. But the one that I probably eat the most often is Chick-fil-A.

What is your dream post-marathon meal?

I’ve always said my favorite meal is chicken and waffles. But I have this vivid memory of the first time that I did a half marathon, which I did with my dad. We finished and we went to a diner—I think all things considered that is my favorite meal; a really good diner breakfast. And that’s what we did. We were so exhausted from this half marathon, so we went straight to this diner, sat down, and got eggs, sausage, hash browns, and toast. Then, you dump a lot of ketchup on it and go to town. And I think that’s probably what I’m going to do. Either that or I’m going to go to, what’s the pastrami place?

What’s the best piece of racing advice you’ve gotten from your family?

I’ve gotten so much advice from my parents. They’re both definitely my shining star role models in terms of everything in life, but specifically in racing because they’re beasts. Both of them are so impressive, so they’ve given me plenty of advice. But I remember before my Ironman, both my parents were like, “Listen, people tell you to go out there and just have fun. But you trained too hard to just have fun. It’s going to fucking suck. Racing sucks, but that’s why it’s a race. This is why you’re going to go hard because you trained hard, so get the best time you can.”

It was a sobering thing, hearing that. And to each their own, that’s what I like to do. A lot of people do like to go out there and just enjoy the day and have fun, but for me, I trained hard for this. I want to make sure that my results reflect that.
