The month of October 2023 witnessed a surge in car sales due to the festive season of Navratri, showcasing wide acceptance among new car buyers for both the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, as evidenced by their sales figures. However, in October 2023, Tata Motors shipped 15,317 units of the Punch, nearly double the 8,097 units of the Hyundai Exter sold across the country.
This unexpected lead secured by the Tata Punch over the Hyundai Exter came as a surprise, especially considering their ongoing close competition since the Exter’s debut. Both SUVs have witnessed high demand among new car buyers, especially first-time buyers, resulting in extended waiting periods for both models. The clear lead of the Punch over the Exter prompted a closer examination of the former’s higher popularity, the reasons for which are quite evident.
Firstly, Tata Motors augmented the production of the Punch before the festive season to cater to the increased demand. Secondly, although both the Punch and Exter offer similar features, the Tata Punch’s widely publicized five-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests has further bolstered its sales among safety-conscious buyers.
Both the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch are available solely with single petrol engines, with the availability of CNG variants based on those models. The Hyundai Exter is equipped with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder 83 PS petrol engine, while the Tata Punch shares its 1.2-litre three-cylinder 86 PS petrol engine. Both micro-SUVs offer 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox options.
