After being showcased a couple of times in the last year, the Tata Curvv has already been confirmed to launch this year in all-electric and petrol-powered versions. However, if reports are to be believed, the Tata Curvv will also get the option of a diesel engine in its lineup. The Tata Curvv diesel will be launched along with the petrol-powered variants of the SUV coupe, with both set to be introduced in the Indian car market following the launch of the Curvv EV.
Tata Motors showcased a near-production version of the Curvv SUV coupe at the Auto Expo 2023, which was a follow-up to the Curvv concept showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. Since its debut in India at the Auto Expo 2023, the Tata Curvv is said to arrive in India in the second half of 2024, with the ICE version of the SUV said to be launched first. However, the petrol and diesel-powered variants of the Tata Curvv will be launched before the Curvv EV, most likely ahead of the festive season of 2024 as reported by ACI.
Tata Motors currently has two diesel engines in its arsenal – the homegrown 1.5-litre 115 PS diesel and the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre 170 PS diesel, and it is the former which will be offered in the Tata Curvv diesel variants. For the Curvv, Tata Motors might tweak this 1.5-litre diesel engine, which currently claims 115 PS of maximum power and 260 Nm of maximum torque. Along with a 6-speed manual transmission, this engine might also be offered with an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox in the Tata Curvv diesel.
While the choices of diesel-powered models in the compact and midsize SUVs are shrinking, Tata Motors is still betting high on diesel powertrains. Currently, the Tata Altroz is the only diesel-powered hatchback sold in India. Also, the availability of diesel variants of Tata Nexon is one of the prime reasons for its higher preference over other compact SUVs in its price range, with the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV300 being the only other diesel-powered alternatives to it.
The Tata Curvv diesel SUV-coupe will enter the midsize SUV segment, which currently has Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos as the only other offerings available with diesel engine options. The availability of a diesel engine in the Tata Curvv, along with an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and all-electric powertrains, will give prospective buyers a wide range of options.
