Steve Cooper hopeful on deadline day Leicester transfers and expects player exits

Steve Cooper says Leicester City will be trying to add to the squad before tomorrow’s transfer deadline, and said some players could be leaving too.

Cooper, 44, confirmed they are working on bringing in attacking midfielder Bilal El Khannouss before the deadline. The 20-year-old Morocco international has undergone his medical and is close to completing a £19million move from Belgian club Genk.

There is interest in striker Tom Cannon and midfielder Boubakary Soumare from other clubs and Cooper admitted there could be some business done on transfer deadline day.

“Anything is possible, of course, including players going the other way as well as coming in,” he says. “Definitely trying to do some things but lets see how it plays out at the death.

“The process is definitely in motion (for El Khannouss), there’s no point denying that. It’s not completed, so I don’t want to go too early on it. It’s in motion and let’s let it complete first.”

Leicester have been widely tipped to bring in a central striker but Jordan Ayew’s performance as a number nine in the Carabao Cup win over Tranmere Rovers could ease the pressure to bring one in.

“Every manager will want to strengthen every position and we’re no different,” he says. “Whether that’s a position you mentioned (number nine) or not. We’re not going to sign players who aren’t going to make the contribution we want. The players we have brought in can make the team and squad better. We’re still in the process of trying to do that.”
