Sporting CP sack Ruben Amorim's replacement Joao Pereira after just six weeks in charge

Sporting CP have sacked Joao Pereira after just six weeks as their head coach.

On Thursday, Sporting confirmed they have reached an agreement with Vitoria de Guimaraes to appoint their head coach Rui Borges and his coaches as their new management team.

Pereira, 40, was appointed on November 11 to replace Ruben Amorim after he took charge at Manchester United.

Pereira started working with Sporting’s under-23 side in 2022, then taking charge of Sporting CP B at the start of this season before replacing Amorim last month.

Since Pereira took over at the senior team, Sporting have won only three of their eight matches, having previously won 16 of 18 under Amorim.

Pereira has presided over successive Champions League defeats, a 5-1 home loss against Arsenal and a 2-1 loss at Club Brugge, and seen Sporting slip to second in Liga Portugal, one place behind Lisbon rivals Benfica.

Amorim, meanwhile, has won four, drawn one and lost four of his opening nine games as United coach, with the English side remaining in 13th place in the Premier League since his arrival.

Pereira’s final game in charge was Sunday’s goalless draw against Gil Vicente.

The former right-back featured 154 times for Sporting across three spells during his playing career, as well as having stints at Benfica, Braga, Valencia and Trabzonspor.

Sporting’s next game comes on Sunday when they face Lisbon rivals Benfica at home in the league.
