Group A: As it stands

Scotland currently top the European Championship qualifying group with a perfect record of five wins from five, 12 goals scored and just one against.

Favourites Spain are second on nine points after four games, with three wins, 16 scored and three conceded. That Scotland loss is the sole black mark on their record so far.

Norway (W2 D1 L2) on seven points and Georgia (W1 D1 L3) on four are mid-table, with Cyprus, who have lost all five while scoring just two and conceding 17, rock bottom with zero points.

On September 12, in a European Championship qualifier, Spain thrashed minnows Cyprus 6-0 in Granada.

That was four days after beating Georgia 7-1 away from home.

They are in imperious form.

There was an international break relatively recently, around a month ago, with England beating local rivals Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park.

Phil Foden scored the opener after half an hour, the effervescent Jude Bellingham doubled the lead just three minutes later, and though Harry Maguire’s unfortunate own goal threatened to make it a tense finish, Harry Kane restored the two-goal advantage with 10 minutes left.

Perhaps more disappointing than the result, though, was the largely lifeless and meek performance against their oldest foes. Scotland know they will need to step it up tonight.
