Sergio Conceicao set to be new Milan coach after Paulo Fonseca sacked

AC Milan have sacked head coach Paulo Fonseca and are set to appoint Sergio Conceicao to replace him.

Fonseca, 51, left Lille to replace Stefano Pioli as Milan head coach in June, signing a three-year deal.

However, the Portuguese coach’s six months in charge have seen the Italian side be unable to maintain a consistent run of form and he was dismissed after Milan’s 1-1 draw with Roma on Sunday.

The draw was Milan’s sixth in the league this season, leaving them eighth in the Serie A table, eight points off a Champions League place. USMNT forward Christian Pulisic is the team’s top scorer in Serie A with five goals but has been sidelined by calf and ankle issues.

Milan are 12th in the Champions League league phase table and currently headed for a place in the knockout play-offs.

Fellow Portuguese coach Concecaio is set to imminently replace Fonseca.

The former Porto coach has been without a job since he left the Portuguese side over the summer.  The 50-year-old’s seven years in charge of Porto saw him win 11 trophies, including three league titles.

Milan are next in action against Juventus on January 3.
