Rice's Ethan Onianwa, one of top OT in nation, entering transfer portal

One of the nation’s top offensive tackle prospects, Rice’s Ethan Onianwa, is entering the transfer portal, he told The Athletic.

In 2024, in Onianwa’s first season playing left tackle for the Owls, he allowed just one sack on 294 pass blocking snaps. The 6-foot-6, 345-pound junior also only yielded two QB hurries, according to PFF. His pressure rate of 2.4 percent ranked in the top 92 percentile of all FBS offensive tackles in 2024.

Prior to this season, Onianwa had started the two previous years for Rice at right tackle. The Katy, Texas native, a bioengineering major born in Michigan, made the AAC’s All-Academic team this year. Onianwa has one season of eligibility remaining.

He was a three-star recruit out of high school. A former high school track standout, Onianwa’s athleticism for his massive frame has intrigued NFL scouts. One top college program said he likely would be the top tackle on their board if he did enter the portal.

“He’s massive, especially in his legs and butt,” said The Athletic’s NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler. “He bends well for his size.”
