OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A day after general manager Eric DeCosta acknowledged that he could look to bring in another quarterback, the Ravens are reuniting with a familiar face. Tyler Huntley, the team’s primary backup for Lamar Jackson for parts of the previous four seasons, has agreed to return to the team’s practice squad, team sources said Friday.
Huntley was let go by the Cleveland Browns after he initially made their 53-man roster as one of four quarterbacks. However, they released him Thursday after they were unable to find a trade partner, according to multiple reports.
The Ravens had one open spot on their practice squad, so Huntley’s addition will not force them to make a corresponding move. For now, he’ll join rookie sixth-round quarterback Devin Leary on the practice squad.
Josh Johnson, 38, will begin the season as Jackson’s primary backup. The Ravens open their season next Thursday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“With Josh, we have a really experienced guy. He’s like having another coach, and he’s great with Lamar, the players love him, he’s highly respected, he’s a talented player,” DeCosta said Thursday. “With Devin, we have a young player, and he had his moments. As we’ve seen with quarterbacks, there’s a lot of things that he can improve on and get better at, and we believe he will. We like the room, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t add another guy, which we could do at some point. It’s like any position on the team; we’ll continue to evaluate and look at players that become available and make decisions based off of that.”
Huntley, 26, originally signed with Baltimore as a college free agent after he wasn’t selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He signed with the Ravens partly because of a pre-existing relationship he had with Jackson. The two were high school rivals in South Florida.
In parts of four seasons with the Ravens, he started 10 games, including Baltimore’s wild-card playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals following the 2022 regular season. He’s thrown for 2,243 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while rushing for 595 yards and three scores in 22 career games.
The Ravens didn’t bring back Huntley as a free agent this offseason, and he signed in March with a Browns team that has Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson on its roster. Five months later, he’s returning to Baltimore.
