Portuguese league to plant 200 trees for every goal scored after wildfires

Liga Portugal have pledged to plant 200 trees in the country for every goal scored in Primeira Liga, the top-flight of Portuguese football, on matchday six.

It comes after wildfires swept across Portugal in recent days with seven confirmed deaths, including three firefighters.

A minute’s silence will be held before every match across this matchday, while a firefighter’s helmet will be symbolically placed in the middle of the pitch and the captains of each club will enter the pitch wearing a firefighter’s peacekeepers’ jacket.

Portuguese football clubs have also come together to deliver donations including food and goods, including protective clothing and hygiene items.

Since the outbreak of the fires on September 15, Portuguese authorities say that 119,000 hectares of land have been burned through in the country.

Temperatures in some parts of Portugal have topped 30C (86F) this week, with northern and central parts of the nation the worst impacted.

The first of the nine matches this gameweek is on the island of Madeira, where Nacional host Braga and concludes on Monday night when Benfica travel to Boavista.

Other notable matches include Porto’s trip to Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday and Sporting CP’s home game against AVS.
