A rare Port Hughes beach shack owned by one family for more than 50 years is up for sale for the first time.
The two-bedroom house at 4 Dowling Drive, which sits on a 600sq m block, is one of the last three original beach shacks in the area that also boasts uninterrupted ocean views.
The vendor’s grandparents first purchased the property from the neighbours in 1970, when they subdivided the block.
“Grandma said that if they bought a beach house, they had to be able to see the water,” the vendor said.
“Grandpa actually built some steps down in front of the beach house that went to the sand.
“Grandma used to sit at the kitchen table and watch Grandpa go down to the boat ramp with his tractor and boat, with the family members aboard sitting in the boat.
“They both loved going down to the beach for walks and collecting shells.”
Harris Real Estate Copper Coast agent Tim Hosking, who is selling the property with Craig Costello, said the location itself is incredibly rare and unique.
“Most people know the older part of Port Hughes, and this is part of that,” Mr Hosking said.
“There was a row of shacks that were built across the waterfront there looking straight out to the Gulf, and they had incredible views.
“This one is at the southern end of that same strip and has a full grass reserve outside that often has weddings or car displays out on the beautiful grassed area.”
He said the uninterrupted ocean views were rare in Port Hughes, given that you need a two-storey home in the newer areas, to be able to see the water.
Mr Hosking said the home and block have unlimited potential for would-be buyers and is also in a livable condition.
“Potentially the shack could be removed, and you could build a beautiful two-storey home with boat storage of some kind,” he said.
He said his phone has been running hot with interest from potential buyers and has already shown a number of interest parties through, including builders and people wanting a sea-change.
“The family are hoping that whoever buys it doesn’t knock it down, but just retains it or develops it,” he said.
“It’s just such a beautiful spot and so well loved.
“To have the right person end up with it is what it’s all about for me.”
