The details: OKA began as a mail order interiors company in the UK in 1999. It started shipping to the US in 2019 and opened its first US store in 2021. They’re a great shop for anyone who’s interested in British style with a contemporary spin—no fussiness here.
Order Process
Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?
$1,895. You can pay with Klarna.
What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any? Are there free swatch options available?
It’s available in Sapphire velvet (which is what I chose), a natural linen slipcover, or a new seafoam print. You can buy other slipcovers separately for the chair too.
What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?
Lead times depend on the color you choose. For the Sapphire velvet upholstery I have, there are multiple in stock. For the linen and seafoam printed versions, you can currently expect a lead of six weeks.
After delivery
What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
At 33.1″D x 30.7″H x 28″W, the chair fits perfectly in my space. I have a little nook in my office that needed a comfortable but not too wide chair to sit next to a floor lamp and side table, and this chair slipped right in.
Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the chair have a tendency to sag?
It’s very comfortable! The velvet is super soft and the chair itself feels very sturdy. I haven’t noticed any tendency to sag. I appreciate that it’s comfortable and cozy while still remaining structured enough for me to sit with a laptop and write—which ultimately is just as much the use of an accent chair in an office for me.
Is the chair suitable for particular decor styles? If so, which?
Since OKA is a British design company, I think it definitely looks particularly great with other British furniture. In general, my favorite pieces take inspo from a more modern material and color palette (the “key piece” in my office is the Sowden FL4 Floor Lamp, which delights me to no end). But after looking at a lot of photos of cozy British interiors, I wanted to find a piece that could bring in a little of that comfortable flair without feeling massively out of place next to the rest of my stuff. I think that this chair really has that versatility I was looking for but it would look great in a more traditional space too.
Is it durable/practical in a modern home?
According to the care instructions, liquids may leave marks on the velvet, so it’s important to take extra care. I think it’s a great piece for an office where you’re less likely to be sloppily eating or drinking (compared to a living room where it could fall victim to a late-night snack).
Is the chair kid- and/or dog-friendly?
Because of the above, I wouldn’t describe it as kid-friendly. That being said, I think it’s completely fine for a dog that isn’t likely to stain the couch (versus a kid who might spill juice).
What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?
Per the care and cleaning instructions, “Regular cleaning with a soft brush and/or gently vacuuming helps keep your furniture looking its best. Accumulated dust will accelerate the wear of covers.” I don’t think stains could be easily removed because liquid may leave marks on the velvet.
Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?
Yes, definitely! Nothing I was surprised about.
