NFL Week 8 brings a lot of massive favorites in games with considerable spreads. At first glance, the Week 8 schedule seems almost … boring? But then you see it, the matchup the league has been dancing around for weeks, and one that could decide Offensive Rookie of the Year: Caleb Williams vs. Jayden Daniels. The No. 1 and No. 2 draft picks in 2024 going head to head.
That is, if Jayden Daniels is healthy enough to play. The Washington Commanders made the difficult but right decision to keep Daniels out of the game after he left early with a rib injury. Early testing showed no fractures, but the team will conduct more tests today and this week.
From an odds perspective, the game is nearly a pick ’em for now and the Daniels injury is likely already affecting the line. If news breaks that Daniels is out, keep an eye on how the odds shift. Of course, the Commanders performed without a blip in Week 7, with veteran Marcus Mariota going 18-for-23 for 205 yards and two touchdown passes in a 40-7 win.
Another big quarterback plot twist to look out for: Will Tua Tagovailoa be back in Week 8 for the Miami Dolphins’ matchup against the Arizona Cardinals? The Dolphins are currently 3.5-point favorites at home with Tagovailoa’s status still uncertain.
There are a few other close games in Week 8, according to the odds.
The Minnesota Vikings, who suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Detroit Lions in Week 7, are 3-point favorites over the 2-4 Los Angeles Rams.
Yet another NFC South matchup sees the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 2.5-point favorites over the Atlanta Falcons in a game that should hoist the winner to the top of the division.
The other two close games see the 5-2 Buffalo Bills as 3-point favorites over the 4-3 Seattle Seahawks and the 4-2 Philadelphia Eagles as 2.5-point favorites over the 3-4 Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals need the win more, but the Eagles still need to prove consistency, even after a Saquon Barkley-fueled blowout over his former team, the New York Giants.
In contrast to the close spreads, Week 8 has plenty of lopsided matchups. It doesn’t look like the NFL’s sole remaining undefeated team is going to give up that prized position in Week 8. The Kansas City Chiefs are heavy road favorites against a flailing Las Vegas Raiders team.
The Cleveland Browns are on the ropes with their quarterback situation, and their reward is to go up against their beast-mode rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.
Another struggling team with an unfortunate matchup is Tennessee. The Titans are 11.5-point underdogs to a Detroit Lions team that managed to upset one of the two remaining undefeated teams in Week 7 and put themselves at the top of the NFC North.
The Sunday night game highlights two teams that started the season as contenders and have been limping through the early weeks: Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers. The Niners are comfortable favorites.
Monday night sees the New York Giants travel to play the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are favored by over a touchdown.
All 32 teams are in action this week with no byes.
