Miguel Almiron's proposed transfer to Charlotte FC collapses after wage dispute

Miguel Almiron’s proposed transfer to Charlotte FC has fallen through.

Newcastle had a verbal agreement with the MLS side, but the deal collapsed after the player and his agent demanded higher wages. In response, Charlotte lowered their offer to $9million (£7m), a figure that was deemed too low by Newcastle.

The Premier League club were open to selling the player but only at the right price, and were not actively pushing for his departure.

Newcastle are happy to keep the 30-year-old as part of their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Almiron joined Newcastle from Atlanta United in January 2019 and has since made 209 appearances, scoring 30 goals.

His standout season came in 2022-23, where he netted 11 Premier League goals, playing a crucial role in Newcastle’s top-four finish and their long-awaited return to the Champions League after two decades.

In October 2022, Almiron was named Premier League player of the month after scoring six goals in six matches, including the Premier League goal of the month for a stunning strike against Fulham.

He also etched his name into Newcastle’s history by scoring their first Champions League goal in more than 20 years, opening the scoring in a 4–1 victory against Paris Saint-Germain — a performance that earned him man of the match.

Almiron featured in 45 matches for Newcastle across all competitions last season and scored five goals. He has been capped on 58 occasions for his country — Paraguay.
