Mats Hummels set to join Roma following Dortmund exit

Mats Hummels is set to join Roma as a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.

The 35-year-old is flying in to Rome on Wednesday (September 4) ahead of undergoing a medical and signing a contract with the Italian club.

The Athletic reported Real Sociedad were in advanced talks to sign the centre-back earlier this summer, but he is now set to instead move to Serie A.

Roma had a busy summer transfer window which included the arrivals of Artem Dovybk, Matias Soule, Enzo Le Fee, Angelino and Mathew Ryan, while Hummels would become the second free agent to join the club this week following on from former Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso.

Hummels has spent his entire club career in Germany so far, winning five Bundesliga titles during two separate spells at Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

The German made 508 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions across two separate spells having made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern.

Hummels spent the 2008-09 season on loan at Dortmund from Bayern before making his move permanent. He went on to become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s side that won back-to-back German league titles in 2011 and 2012.

Hummels returned to Bayern in 2016 and went on the three consecutive league titles. He has 70 caps for his country and was part of the Germany team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
