Marlins to add Giants' Pedro Guerrero as new hitting coach: Source

The Miami Marlins are hiring Pedro Guerrero as their hitting coach, a league source told The Athletic on Sunday. Guerrero, 35, was previously the assistant hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Guerrero’s hiring comes on the heels of a managerial change for the Marlins. Earlier Sunday, multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic that Miami was set to hire Los Angeles Dodgers first-base coach Clayton McCullough to be their next manager. Former Marlins manager, Skip Schumaker, stepped down after the 2024 season.

Guerrero has several ties to Marlins assistant general manager Gabe Kapler dating to 2016, when he was the bench coach for the Ogden Raptors, a Dodgers minor-league affiliate. Guerrero was hired to Kapler’s major league staff in 2018 with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he served as an assistant hitting coach. In 2021, Kapler hired Guerrero once more for the same position with San Francisco.

The Giants will add one hitting coach, not two, to replace Justin Viele (who was hired by the Texas Rangers earlier in the week) and Guerrero and supplement hitting coach Pat Burrell. Triple-A hitting coach Damon Minor is well-regarded and figures to be considered.
