Manchester City are set to appoint Therese Sjogran as their new women’s director of football.
Sjogran replaces Niels Nielsen who stepped down in June after 13 months in what was a newly created role at the club. He led player development across the women’s first team and recruitment for the women’s and girls’ pathway but wanted to return to coaching.
A former Sweden international with over 200 caps to her name, Sjogran joins from Swedish top-flight side FC Rosengard where she has been sporting director since 2015.
Rosengard have just won the Damallsvenskan league title winning every one of their games, a significant improvement from the previous campaign when they finished seventh.
Sjogran, 47, will work with head coach Gareth Taylor who signed a new three-year deal in March that keeps him at the club until 2027 while managing director Charlotte O’Neill leads the women’s team’s business operations.
Taylor said in late September they are looking to recruit another first-team coach alongside new first-team assistant coach Chad Gribble and goalkeeping coach Diego Ristrepo. They replaced the summer departures of assistants Shaun Goater, Alan Mahon and goalkeeper coach Chris Williams.
Last season Manchester City finished runners-up for the seventh time in the last 10 years behind Chelsea, who won the title on goal difference.
They sit top of the Women’s Super League (WSL) table with a game in hand and have secured two wins out of two in the Champions League group stages, including a 2-0 victory over holders Barcelona.
