The imminent launch of the extensively revamped versions of the Tata Harrier and Safari seems to be intensifying the competition. Reports suggest that Mahindra is discreetly working on introducing several updates to its segment-leading XUV700, planning to include new features and adjust variant offerings.
A leaked report by T-BHP circulating on the internet hints that the Mahindra XUV700, currently available in five-seater configurations for lower-spec variants and seven-seater configurations for higher-spec ones, might soon offer an optional six-seater configuration in its higher variants. The leaked information indicates the possibility of a six-seater layout with captain seats in the middle row, alongside additional features, aiming to keep pace with the upgraded Harrier and Safari models entering the segment.
Furthermore, the report confirms that the XUV700 is set to receive an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, addressing a significant absence in the SUV until now. Additionally, though not officially confirmed, rumors suggest that Mahindra might introduce new top-spec variants above the existing flagship AX7 L variant. These speculated higher-spec models, tentatively named AX9 and AX9 L, could incorporate new features such as ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, sliding second-row seats, and updated connected car applications.
To accommodate these changes, Mahindra might discontinue a few lower-selling XUV700 variants, facilitating the introduction of new models while boosting production for the current high-demand AX5 and AX7 variants. With these anticipated updates, Mahindra may revise the SUV’s prices in the coming days. Presently, the Mahindra XUV700 is priced between Rs 14.03 lakh and Rs 26.57 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
No mechanical changes
Despite the introduction of new features, the powertrain setup of the Mahindra XUV700 is not expected to change. The flagship SUV will continue to offer a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine delivers 200 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque, while the diesel engine generates 185 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque (450 Nm in automatic variants). Both engine options are paired with two transmission choices – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, with the top-spec AX7 and AX7 L diesel-automatic variants also providing an all-wheel-drive option.
The XUV700 was Mahindra’s second car to receive a five-star rating, following the Mahindra XUV300. The Global NCAP awarded the XUV700 the five-star rating after it scored 16.03 out of a total of 17 points in the crash test. The structure of the car was also deemed stable, and the potential injuries to the front passengers were found to be marginal. Furthermore, the XUV700 achieved the highest points ever for a child safety rating, scoring 41.66 out of a maximum of 49, which is the highest for any car made in India.
For the crash test, Global NCAP tested the base variant of the XUV700, which only came equipped with two airbags, ABS, and ISOFIX as standard. However, Mahindra offers up to seven airbags in the top-end variant and additional features like ESC and ADAS in the higher-end variants.
In order to further enhance occupant safety, the crash test rating agency recommended that Mahindra offer side and curtain airbags as optional equipment in the lower variants. The facility conducted crash tests on two cars, as passing the side-impact test is also necessary. The XUV700 performed exceptionally well in this aspect too.
