Mahindra Thar ROXX Launched At Rs. 11.99 Lakh

We got it right yet again, and in line with our prediction, Mahindra has just launched the Thar ROXX at Rs. 11.99 lakh, ex-showroom. This price of course is for the base MX1 petrol trim, which is powered by the 2 liter-4 cylinder mFalcon unit with 160 Bhp of peak power and 330 Nm of peak torque. It gets a rear wheel drive layout and a 6 speed manual gearbox. A similarly-speced MX1 diesel version is priced at Rs. 13.99 lakh, ex-showroom.

The diesel motor – the tried and tested 2.2 liter-4 cylinder mHawk unit makes 150 Bhp-330 Nm. Mahindra has held back on announcing prices of the other trims of the Thar ROXX, but they’re expected to out early tomorrow, when the actual launch happens to coincide with India’s Independence Day. It’ll be only fitting that the prices of the full Mahindra Thar ROXX range are revealed on the country’s most important day.

Coming back to the sharp starting price of the Thar ROXX, it’s sure to set the cat amongst pigeons as the new Mahindra SUV will prove to be a tempting offering for everyone buying a range of compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota HyRyder. Why, even Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio-N buyers would be tempted into putting down deposits for the Thar ROXX as even the base MX1 trim has some serious equipment.

Picture this, the MX1 trim of the Mahindra Thar ROXX gets a metal hard top, LED head lamps, LED tail lamps, 18 inch steel wheels, touchscreen infotainment system, push button start, 6 airbags, ESP, ABS, brake locking differential, height adjustable driver’s seat, fabric seats, rear AC vents, 3 point seat belts for all five passengers, 60:40 split rear seat, USB c-port charging and a penta-link suspension.

Mahindra will put out the full spec sheet and prices for other variants of the Thar ROXX tomorrow. Going by the well-speced and sharply price base trim, expect good numbers going forward. The power and torque numbers for the mFalcon turbo petrol and mHawk turbo diesel units will also see a bump up on higher trims. 6 speed torque converter automatic transmissions and a four wheel drive system will also make an appearance on the higher trims.

Seats will go art leather, and will get ventilation. They are even expected to get electric adjustability. The Thar ROXX promises to offer a superior cabin experience that’s never seen before on a Thar sold in India, and this will be crucial as potential buyers are likely to compare the new Mahindra SUV with C-Segment compact SUVs such as the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta – both of which have high levels of fit and finish.

The Mahindra Thar ROXX 5-door 4X4 SUV sits on a similar platform as the Scorpio-N but uses a ladder frame chassis that is one generation (4G) ahead compared to the former (3G). In terms of pricing, the Thar ROXX actually undercuts the Scorpio-N, and this trend is likely to be persist across most variants. We’ll know all of this and more by early tomorrow. Watch this space.
