The case for Stewart’s MVP season started building in just her second game with New York, when she scored a Liberty franchise, and personal career-high, 45 points against the Indiana Fever on May 21. From there it only continued, as she became the first-ever WNBA player to record three 40-point games in a season in mid-August and set a Liberty franchise with six 30-plus point scoring games on Aug. 26. Setting the stage for the super-team showdown
New York defeated Connecticut 87-84, closing out its semifinal matchup in four games and moving to the franchise’s first finals appearance since 2002.
Jonquel Jones still remembers the disappointment of last year. But she said Sunday, “It’s the beauty of sports to be with this team and be going into a finals and having an opportunity again.” She hopes to “finally get one,” when the Liberty’s series with the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces begins today.
