Tissue culture labs are currently rather niche but successful technological innovations within the industry. In the world of horticulture, tissue culture labs provide the strict and sanitary conditions necessary for the extremely precise growth and maintenance of plant tissue, leading to exact genetic copies, or clones, of the base plant. This is especially beneficial to growers dealing with the challenges of breeding and growing rare, sterile, and stubborn plants.
American Floral Endowment‘s upcoming webinar on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, as part of its ongoing Grow Pro series, will cover some of the recent breakthroughs and success stories of tissue culture, as well as the benefits that they can bring to greenhouse operations. Covered topics of the webinar will include:
The featured speaker for “Success with Tissue Culture” is Dr. Dayton Wilde, a Department of Horticulture Professor at the University of Georgia, with an emphasis on the molecular genetics of ornamental plants. Wilde completed his Ph.D. in plant molecular biology from Texas A&M University after receiving his bachelor’s degree in botany from Duke University.
According to Wilde, “My research interests are in the application of molecular genetics to improve traits of ornamental plants. Genetic resources are expanding rapidly with the sequencing of plant genomes and transcriptomes. My lab is currently using DNA sequence information to screen plant populations for natural variation or induced variation in candidate genes that control ornamental traits.”
Willing participants can register for the webinar directly through Zoom or by visiting the Grow Pro Webinar series page on the AFE website, where information on future webinars in the series can be found. Recordings of all past Grow Pro webinars can also be found on the AFE’s YouTube channel.
