Kylian Mbappe to undergo tests on thigh injury sustained in Champions League win over Atalanta

Kylian Mbappe will undergo tests to determine the extent of a thigh injury after the forward was forced off during the first half of Real Madrid’s Champions League win over Atalanta on Tuesday night.

Mbappe, 25, had opened the scoring for the 15-time European Cup winners, taking his all-time Champions League goal tally to 50, becoming the second-youngest player ever to reach the milestone.

But the former Paris Saint-Germain forward had to be substituted 25 minutes later after experiencing discomfort in his left thigh. He was able to walk off the pitch before being replaced by Rodrygo.

The France international has scored 10 goals in all competitions since joining Madrid in the summer.

Any period of prolonged absence will come as a bitter blow to manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is already dealing with a long list of first-team absentees.

David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao and Eduardo Camavinga have all been unavailable through injury, while Tuesday night’s clash in Bergamo was Vinicius Junior’s first game back since picking up a thigh issue in November.

The Brazil international scored marked his return with Madrid’s second goal of the night before Jude Bellingham added a third. Ademola Lookman grabbed a consolation for the hosts but it was not enough to prevent Ancelotti’s side from claiming all three points to move up to 18th in the league standings with two matches remaining before the knockout round.

Madrid return to action against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. They travel to Qatar to play in the Intercontinental Cup next Wednesday before concluding the year at home to Sevilla on December 22.
