Gary O’Neil says his Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 4-1 victory at Fulham was one of his favourite days as head coach of the club.
O’Neil saw his side record back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since February as Matheus Cunha scored two goals and created another to help his side see off the Londoners.
It extended Wolves’ unbeaten run to four games and built on their 2-0 win against Southampton before the international break and helped lift them out of the relegation zone following a dismal start to the season.
“I was really pleased for the fans and the players who have both suffered some tough weeks recently,” said O’Neil.
“I wanted to make sure that fans and players both enjoyed that. It was a moment that they should enjoy because there have been some tough moments.
“There’s been a lot of hard work and we’ve never shown any cracks.
“We’ve always kept working, always kept really humble and honest and fought to try to turn the situation around and this was a step in the right direction today.
“It’s one of my favourite performances given all the adversity, the pressure that the group has been under, some of the injuries and the illnesses that we suffered.
“It’s one of my favourite afternoons as a Wolves head coach.”
Cunha took his goal tally for the season to seven with two fine finishes and he provided the pass for Joao Gomes to score his second of the season.
“Everyone knows how important he (Cunha) is to us but it is important to recognise the work that he’s put in because this isn’t the Matheus Cunha that arrived at Wolves,” said O’Neil.
“His numbers, his understanding, his willingness to be in and amongst the team out of possession and do the other side of the game has come on so much.
“I love working with him because the penny’s definitely dropped that he can be a top, top player.
“There were gaps before but he works every single day to be as good as he can be now and I love working with him.
“His talent is incredible, obviously, but if you watch the top players, they’re able to do it week in week out.”
Wolves return to action at home to Bournemouth next Saturday.
