Erik ten Hag backs Casemiro to 'bounce back' after Liverpool display

Erik ten Hag has backed Casemiro to “bounce back” after the midfielder was replaced following an error-strewn first half in Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The 32-year-old twice conceded possession in situations that directly led to goals, both of which were scored by Luis Diaz to make it 2-0 to the visitors at the break.

The Brazil international, a five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, was replaced by 20-year-old Toby Collyer, who came on for his Premier League debut.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Ten Hag said the substitution was a tactical change with United having to chase the game.

“When we are 2-0 down against Liverpool with their qualities we had to take risk as we had to bounce back,” he said. “We needed a player who could cover ground.”

United’s new midfield summer signing Manuel Ugarte was presented on the pitch before the game but could not be registered in time to make his debut against Liverpool.

Asked whether Casemiro still had an important role to play for the team going forward, Ten Hag replied: “He has showed so often that he is a great character.

“We all have seen great moments from him, being decisive for us in the midfield and he will show it again, I’m sure. He will bounce back.”

The Dutchman later dismissed suggestions Casemiro had left the stadium after being removed at the break.

“I met him after the game in the dressing room so he didn’t leave at half time,” said Ten Hag.

Defeat for United leaves them 14th in the table with three points from their opening three games.

Their first match after the international break is against newly-promoted Southampton, who are still waiting for their first Premier League point of the season.
