Crystal Palace have £18.5m transfer offer for Adam Wharton rejected by Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers have rejected an £18.5million offer from Crystal Palace to sign midfielder Adam Wharton.

Rovers would be seeking a higher price for the 19-year-old England youth international and to retain him on loan until the summer, which does not suit their Premier League counterparts.

It is unclear if Palace will continue the pursuit as they attempt to strengthen Roy Hodgson’s squad following the costly loss of Cheick Doucoure in November to a long-term Achilles injury.

The highly-rated Wharton has shone for Championship side Rovers this season, making 26 league appearances. He has started 22 of those matches and registered five goal contributions.

He joined the club aged six and was rewarded with a new five-year contract in December, which tied him down until the end of June 2028.

Wharton, who was named Blackburn’s young player of the season in the previous campaign, possesses many exciting qualities, notably his two-footedness and willingness to take a defensive role in central midfield.

He is good at recovering possession — some standout moments from his debut against Blackpool in 2022 were big tackles to break up attack — and at applying pressure to prevent the opposition from playing or turning on the ball.
