Couch Review: HAY Mags One-Arm Sectional

Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

It’s quite comfortable, both as a couch to lay down on and read a book and as a couch for hosting tons of visitors. Admittedly, I do often feel envious of my fellow couch sitter if I don’t secure the spot that’s against the armrest. I’ve also noticed that, because mine is secondhand, there is some sag to the spot that is most often used. Since I bought it from a used furniture store and not a specific owner, I don’t have any information on how old the piece is.

Lay test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

Both my partner and I are quite tall (he’s six foot one and I’m a few inches shorter), and the thing I love about this deep seat couch is that one of the ends is open, making it super comfy to stretch out on. Many other couches (particularly apartment-friendly couches) feel too confined to do so.

Is the sectional suitable for particular decor styles. If so, which ones?

I think this 3-seater sofa is probably best suited for people who like contemporary design, but it’s stylistically neutral enough that I think it would work in a lot of spaces of a lot of different styles (Scandi, midcentury, super-minimalist).

Is it durable and practical in a modern home?

Super durable. This is the type of couch you can sit on while eating dinner and not have any stress about it.

Is the couch kid and/or dog friendly?

Yes and yes! It has no sharp edges, and it doesn’t show fur super easily when my dog is shedding. There are no concerns with my dog playing on the sofa at all—the fabric does not show scratch marks if she digs into it, and there’s no parts where I’m concerned she could get hurt running into. Plus, because it’s low frame, I don’t have to worry about it being difficult for her to jump onto it.

What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?

The care instructions say to vacuum the couch regularly using an upholstery nozzle to remove dust, and to blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. I think stains could be easily removed, but it certainly helps that I don’t have a super-light-colored fabric.

Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?

Yes! That being said, I’d already seen the HAY Mags in person years ago (which is what made me want it in the first place), so I wasn’t going into buying the couch blind. It’s hard to say what I liked about the couch from photos versus from that original in-person experience. If anything, I’d say you might be surprised by how deep the couch is (making it even more comfortable). I really like how adaptable the modular couch is for different circumstances (for parties, for laying by myself, for watching a movie with my partner and dog) compared to the couch I had before did not extremely comfortable for any of those situations. It’s been exciting to have a piece that makes me want to be out in my living room more and not just laying in bed.
