Commanders, OL Sam Cosmi agree to 4-year extension: Why it's significant for Washington

The Washington Commanders agreed to a four-year contract extension with starting guard Sam Cosmi, one of the big men tasked with protecting rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Cosmi, a 2021 second-round pick by the organization’s previous staff, is coming off his best season despite switching to the interior from tackle. The new leadership, including coach Dan Quinn, quickly recognized the self-described “nasty” lineman’s value.

“He’s a Commander through and through,” Quinn said. “He plays tough, square, square and strong. He’ll be an anchor inside for years to come.”

Financial terms of the deal were not announced. Cosmi’s rookie deal runs through the 2024 season.

“If I handle everything on the field, that handles itself,” Cosmi said to The Athletic in training camp about a potential extension. “Other than that, we’ll see. That’s up to my agent and the guys up in the front office.”

Cosmi is the first player drafted by Washington to sign a second contract since wide receiver Terry McLaurin, a 2019 third-round pick. McLaurin signed a three-year, $71 million extension in June 2022 ahead of the final year of his rookie deal.

Quinn served as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator for Cosmi’s first three seasons, two of which were spent at tackle.

“(The previous staff) did a good job of moving him inside. Having that ability inside to (protect) the pocket is a big deal,” Quinn said. “This is an athlete that can pull and move, and that’s a big deal for our offense.”

Washington’s offensive line is a significant question entering the season, but the strength is inside with center Tyler Biadasz and Cosmi.

“He plays pissed off,” right tackle Andrew Wylie said of Cosmi. “He’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever played next to.”
