Model tested: Uma T4
The details: Uma’s manufacturer, Polkima Moulded Composites, has been creating fiberglass elements for the automotive and transportation industries for 35 years, and Uma brings that niche expertise to the furniture world with their distinct modular designs. London-based architecture and interiors firm Holloway Li designed the playful T4 seating line inspired by the manufacturer’s history and by early aughts aesthetics. It ships exclusively in the US from Coming Soon NY. The piece’s form isn’t overly complicated, but it’s so distinct and manages to remain super delightful to look at—even after living with it for months.

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
The whole chair measures 33 inches tall by 38 inches wide by 40 inches deep, while the actual seat itself measures 17 inches tall by 25 inches deep. It’s quite large but I think that’s the fun of it—it makes you feel like a little kid or like you’ve walked into a cartoon. I think it completely works in my apartment, but I can definitely see a pair of them (or a sofa, since they’re modular) being really cute in a larger house.
Sit Test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the chair have a tendency to sag?
It is EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE. Because it’s such a big chair there are so many different ways to lounge in it, which is definitely what I look for in an accent chair. Its massive built-in cushions are what make it such a fun piece to look at, and they’re equally comfortable. At $2100, it’s a big splurge for most people, but I think it really delivers with its ability to totally recontextualize your space and offer a very, very comfortable place to sit—making it totally worth the investment.
Is the chair suitable for particular decor styles? If so, which?
I’d say it’s best for people with more modern or contemporary pieces or who deliberately have a mélange of decor styles—which is just to say I can’t really see it working in a space that is all classic British or something along those lines, because it is such an eye-catching piece that it won’t fall into the background.
