Carlos Sainz bests Max Verstappen for pole in F1 Italian GP qualifying

Carlos Sainz secured pole for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, his first pole position of the season. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Williams’ Alex Albon had another standout qualifying round, navigating his way through the Alternative Tire Allocation to qualify sixth. This came after his P4 start at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend.
  • A total of 0.067 seconds separated the top three drivers.
  • The stewards were going to investigate both Ferrari drivers after qualifying for allegedly failing to follow the race director’s instructions concerning the maximum lap time. They decided to take no further action, the announcement coming shortly after Sainz secured pole in front of a roaring crowd.
