Defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the current favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, was injured early in the first period of Team Canada’s round-robin game on Friday against Latvia during the World Juniors in Ottawa.
Schaefer was coming into the offensive zone at full speed, and his left shoulder collided with the net following a chance on goal. He immediately left the game and had yet to return to the bench when the second period began. Schaefer had been one of the more important players for Canada through their first four periods of tournament play.
