Brentford captain Christian Norgaard signs new two-year contract

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard has signed a new contract with the club through to 2027.

The 31-year-old’s previous terms had been due to expire in the summer — although Brentford possessed an option to trigger a 12-month extension.

The Athletic reported in February that, when all parties was ready, they would sit down and work out whether to activate that option or negotiate a new contract, and Norgaard has now signed a new two-year-deal.

“This new contract was a no-brainer for us and Christian,” said head coach Thomas Frank. “Christian has been an integral part of the fantastic journey we have been on these past six years. He is our club captain and one of our most important players.

“His ability to sense danger and make interceptions is at an extraordinarily high level, as is his ability to play forward on the first or second touch. And he has picked up his goal threat this season.”

Norgaard joined Brentford from Fiorentina in 2019 and has gone on to make 187 appearances, helping the club win promotion from the Championship and establish themselves in the Premier League. He has made 25 top flight appearances this season, providing four goals and two assists.

The midfielder previously worked with Frank while playing for Denmark’s youth sides and then again at Danish side Brondby.

“The first time I coached Christian, he was a no.10; now he is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League,” Frank added.

“I’m very happy. Hopefully we can continue to be successful together with Christian leading the team.”

Norgard becomes the latest Brentford player to commit his future to the club, with Mikkel Damsgaard, Keane Lewis-Potter and Aaron Hickey all signing new deals in January.
