Astros' Jose Altuve ejected vs. Padres for taking off his sock and shoe

SAN DIEGO — Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was ejected from Tuesday night’s game against the San Diego Padres after removing the shoe and sock from his left foot while arguing with a ref that a foul ball struck him.

Batting with two outs and the go-ahead run in scoring position during the ninth inning, Altuve appeared to foul a 100.3 mile per hour sinker off his left foot. He did not leave the batter’s box after making contact, but home-plate umpire Brennan Miller never made a definitive call.

Altuve’s grounder trickled to third baseman Manny Machado, who completed the putout without Altuve ever leaving the batter’s box. Altuve raised his arms in disgust while manager Joe Espada and bench coach Omar López attempted to intervene in the argument.

While they did, Altuve removed his left cleat, tore off his sock and began to hobble toward the umpires. Altuve earned his second ejection of the season while pointing at his toes. Espada continued the argument and was also ejected.
