Alabama starting quarterback Jalen Milroe recorded five total touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s season opener against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Here’s what you need to know:
- Milroe completed 13 of 19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns.
- On the ground, Milroe posted 48 yards on seven carries with two rushing touchdowns.
- Milroe was taken out of the game in the third quarter and replaced by backup Tyler Buchner. The Crimson Tide defeated the Blue Raiders 56-7.
- Alabama named Milroe the starting quarterback for the season opener on Friday. He served as the backup in 2022.
Backstory
Entering Saturday, Milroe’s appeared in 12 games in his career, passing for 338 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions on 57 percent completion. He’s accumulated 320 rushing yards (seven yards per carry) and one touchdown on the ground. He played in relief of starter Bryce Young against Arkansas in 2022, a 49-26 win, and started the following week in a 24-20 win over Texas A&M.
Milroe beat out redshirt freshman Ty Simspon, who’s been competing for the starting job since January, redshirt sophomore Buchner, who transferred from Notre Dame in June, and true freshmen Eli Holstein and Dylan Lonergan.
