Manchester United exploring Tyrell Malacia January loan

Manchester United are exploring a January loan move for defender Tyrell Malacia.

Sources close to Malacia, speaking on the condition of anonymity, say discussions have taken place with several clubs about a potential loan, with a move either to a fellow Premier League side or club abroad a possibility.

The 25-year-old missed the entirety of the 2023-24 with a knee injury and has found game-time limited this season since returning to action in November, making just four appearances for Ruben Amorim’s side.

Malacia has struggled for minutes despite Luke Shaw’s injury absence and has been behind Diogo Dalot, naturally a right-back, in the pecking order for the left wing-back role in United’s 3-4-3 formation.

The Netherlands international started the Premier League defeats to Arsenal and Bournemouth in December but was substituted off at half-time in both matches and has not featured since the Bournemouth loss on December 22.

He also started against Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, playing a combined total of 107 minutes in those games. The Bodo/Glimt match marked his first start for 550 days after undergoing multiple knee surgeries.

Malacia joined United from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 under Erik ten Hag and made 39 appearances in 2022-23, providing competition to Shaw at left-back and allowing the England international to feature at centre-back.

United return to action against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
