Why Eason Horticultural Resources Recently Became 100% Employee-Owned

Eason Horticultural Resources (EHR) has transitioned to an employee-owned company through an ESOP structure, effective Oct. 1, 2024. This significant change makes EHR a 100% employee-owned organization.

The transition reinforces EHR’s dedication to preserving its long-standing legacy. This new structure, according to the company, promotes a workplace where mutual success is a shared priority and where employees are empowered to actively contribute to its growth, shaping the future of the company as both colleagues and stakeholders.

As of Oct. 1, the executive management team includes:

  • Mike Pezzillo – President and COO
  • Melanie Byrne – Senior Vice President of Operations and Plant Product Manager
  • Tim Iott – Senior Vice President and CFO

Jim Eason will serve as Chairman of the Board and Head of Special Projects. Sonney Mosley continues as Greenhouse Products Specialist.

When EHR was started 31 years ago, the purpose was to create a sales company that offered all employees, as well as customers and vendors, a greater opportunity to be successful. This is the natural next step in continuing that legacy.

In an interview with Greenhouse Grower, Pezzillo shared some additional insights about the transition.

Greenhouse Grower: What were the reasons for transitioning Eason to an ESOP company?

Pezzillo: We wanted a smooth business succession that puts the company into the hands of the employees, giving all employees an ownership stake. It allows for preservation of the company and culture that made EHR what it is today, and avoids the need for any restructuring.

Greenhouse Grower: What does this mean for Eason’s customers?

Pezzillo: It’s completely seamless for our customers. Our customers can take comfort in knowing that all of the people they’ve worked with are all now employee-owners and will continue to strive to provide them an excellent level of service.
