Manchester United's Andre Onana hopes Ruud van Nistelrooy stays on club's coaching staff

Andre Onana hopes that Manchester United interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy remains at the club after Ruben Amorim’s permanent arrival next week.

Sporting Lisbon head coach Amorim officially begins work at United on November 11 with no decision yet made on the future of 48-year-old Van Nistelrooy — previously head coach at PSV Eindhoven.

The former Dutch striker, who has previously reiterated his desire to remain on Amorim’s staff, has not yet heard if he will be retained in the club’s new-look coaching staff.

Van Nistelrooy has overseen a Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City and Europa League triumph at home to PAOK Salonika either side of a 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea, while his interim spell will end with Sunday’s league visit of Leicester.

“100 per cent,” goalkeeper Onana told TNT Sports after Thursday’s 2-0 victory over PAOK when asked if he would like Van Nistelrooy to remain at the club. “He’s a really good guy, a really good coach — since he’s been here he’s been helping us a lot.

“He has so much experience. He’s been amazing since he’s been here. We’ve only had him a few days as a head coach, which is different, but he’s been fantastic. The players are happy.

“But it’s not something we can decide. The club made the decision and we have to accept that this has to be between him and the club. At the end of the day, they are the ones who have to decide.”

Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals for United across five seasons during his playing career, helping the club win the 2003 Premier League title, and returned to the club in a coaching capacity this summer under Erik ten Hag.

United are next in action at home to Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday, with it remaining uncertain if Van Nistelrooy will remain at the club beyond that match.
