Is Leonardo DiCaprio a Bode Guy Now?

For much of the 21st century, Leonardo DiCaprio has set the tone for how a certain kind of Hollywood A-list man dresses—which is to say nondescript, masculine, and exceedingly laid-back. His wardrobe consists almost exclusively of solid-color V-neck T-shirts, straight-leg jeans, knee-length shorts, and sneakers in neutral tones. Historically, the Oscar winner also tends to obscure his face when he’s out in public, be it with dark sunglasses, a hat pulled low over his eyes, a surgical mask (as has become an enduring trend among celebrities since the pandemic), or all three at once; indeed, his incognito look has become so distinct that it’s now more of an identifier than a disguise. And even when Leo does make the rare red-carpet appearance these days, his suits are classic-cut, Armani, and never, ever weird.

So it’s curious, then, that DiCaprio was seen this week carrying a pair of boxy plaid shopping bags from Bode—New York City’s epicenter of craftily idiosyncratic menswear—while he and his model-girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti went for a walk around Manhattan’s Lower East Side, not far from the brand’s men’s boutique on Hester Street. The Oscar winner was still wearing his brazenly casual uniform: a plain white tee, black baseball cap, gray cargo shorts with a matching hoodie tied around his waist, and gray New Balances, with a cloth face mask resting on his chin. But who knows what sort of twinkly treasures lay folded inside those zippered nylon bags? Is it only a matter of time before we see Leo in a hand-painted barn jacket or sawtooth-star-quilted trousers?

In an email to GQ on Thursday, a Bode representative declined to comment on DiCaprio’s shopping experience.

In February, actor Jeremy Allen White carried flowers in his repurposed Bode tote at a Los Angeles farmers’ market.

At the very least, the actor is now in possession of some of Hollywood’s hottest sustainable accessories, which are the reusable Bode shopping bags themselves. Fellow actor Jeremy Allen White—a newish A-lister who seems to have taken a page from Leo’s book of paparazzi-dodging—loves to repurpose his Bode tote to transport enormous bouquets of fresh flowers during his frequent visits to Los Angeles farmers’ markets. How will DiCaprio fill his new status totes? By our rough estimation, the average Bode bag looks like it could hold approximately 300 vapes.
