In an effort to expand its presence in the electric mobility sector, Mahindra, India’s largest SUV manufacturer, is set to introduce a range of new electric SUVs in the upcoming years. Recently, during its annual Independence Day event, the company outlined its plans for the electrification journey and unveiled several new vehicles. Notably, among these announcements was the debut of the electric version of the dedicated lifestyle off-roader, the Thar, named the Thar.e. However, this wasn’t the sole EV vehicle showcased. To discover the additional models that were revealed, read on!
As mentioned earlier, a significant highlight of the event was the introduction of the electrified version of the lifestyle off-roader Thar, named the Mahindra Thar.e. This model presents a fresh exterior design that deviates from the traditional CJ Jeep-style aesthetics. Importantly, the Mahindra Thar.e is the first Thar variant to deviate from the conventional ladder-on-frame chassis.
According to the company’s information, this model will be constructed on Mahindra’s INGLO P1 platform, incorporating a flat battery positioned between the wheels. Reports suggest it might adopt potent motors sourced from the renowned German automotive company, Volkswagen, capable of delivering power outputs of 80 kW and 210 kW for the front and rear axles, respectively.
Furthermore, this SUV will feature a battery common to other INGLO SUVs, likely to come in 60 kWh and 80 kWh options. It’s estimated that this setup could offer a range of around 325 km from the smaller battery and an extended range of 435 km to 450 km from the larger battery (WLTP cycle). Regarding the release date, a launch after October 2026 is anticipated, although it has not been officially confirmed. Lastly, the projected price range falls in the vicinity of Rs 18 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
Transitioning to the next addition, the Mahindra XUV.e8 stands out. Essentially, the XUV.e8 represents the electric iteration of the already successful Mahindra XUV700. Despite resembling its internal combustion engine counterpart in terms of body design, this new model integrates distinctive EV-specific design elements such as enclosed grilles and enlarged LED DRLs with triangular LED headlights, accompanied by copper highlights.
In terms of the powertrain, it’s likely that the XUV.e8 will be equipped with an 80 kWh battery pack, offering an extended range on a single charge. The electric powertrain is projected to generate an output ranging between 230 PS and 350 PS, promising an exhilarating yet environmentally conscious driving experience. Mahindra has also affirmed the inclusion of an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. The anticipated launch of the XUV.e8 is tentatively set for December 2024.
Mahindra Bolero EV
A recent revelation by Mahindra during the event is its intention to launch an electrified variant of the Bolero. Despite having been in the market for several years, the Bolero remains one of the best-selling SUVs in Mahindra’s lineup.
The upcoming Bolero EV, falling under Mahindra’s ‘.e’ moniker, is expected to feature a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) setup with motors sourced from Volkswagen. As of now, specific details concerning the range, battery capacity, and power outputs have not been divulged by the brand and are likely to be kept under wraps for a few more months. Launch dates have also not been disclosed by the company.
Mahindra Scorpio EV
Last but not least, the final SUV on this roster is the electric iteration of one of Mahindra’s most successful monikers to date, the Scorpio. Finally emerging from under wraps, the company has unveiled plans to electrify this beloved SUV in the coming years.
Similar to the Bolero EV, information about the Scorpio EV remains limited. Like its Bolero counterpart, this SUV will also adopt the ‘.e’ moniker. Furthermore, reports suggest that it will feature motors initially sourced from BYD and Valeo, and later from Volkswagen, in addition to an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration. The battery capacity is projected to be around 75 kWh. The expected launch date for the Scorpio is likely to be after April 2026.
